“Louisville two-piece GRLwood call themselves “scream-pop,” and that’s just about the perfect way to sum up their sound, which has one foot in underground ’90s screamo and the other in the same decade’s poppy post-grunge.
Those sounds have both made some pretty major comebacks within the modern indie rock scene in recent years, and it’s cool to hear a band doing them both at once in such an appealing way. They’ve also got elements of queercore and feminist punk in the uncompromising lyricism of their upcoming sophomore album I Sold My Soul To The Devil When I Was 12, which drops this Friday (8/2) via sonaBLAST! Records.
One of its songs, “I Hate My Mom,” is streaming now, and it’s an angsty, catchy, driving indie-punk ripper that’s one of the album’s most memorable songs. It’s not totally indicative of how the rest of the album sounds, though….”
